A parking lot full of vehicles is normally treated as dead space.

For a mobile detailing company, it can be a concentrated customer base.

The business concept is straightforward: instead of forcing vehicle owners to drive to a detailing shop—or sending a mobile detailer across town from one scattered customer to another—the company partners with workplaces, apartment complexes, office parks, medical facilities, warehouses, and other locations where large numbers of vehicles remain parked for hours.

Customers book before or during the day. The company cleans their vehicles while they work, exercise, attend appointments, or remain at home.

The service itself is not new. Mobile detailing already exists.

The startup opportunity is in density, convenience, and route economics.

This analysis uses the Liam Startup Ledger nine-point framework and current market data rather than invented market numbers.

Our Evaluation Framework

To compare completely different industries using the same rigorous analytical standards, every featured startup is evaluated through a consistent, nine-point framework:

Problem: What friction or inefficiency does the company solve?

Market Size: How large is the Total Addressable Market (TAM), Serviceable Addressable Market (SAM), and Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM)?

Target Customer: Who specifically holds the purchasing power?

Startup Costs: What capital is required to reach the minimum viable product or launch?

Unit Economics: What is the Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) relative to Lifetime Value (LTV)?

Profit Margins: What are the expected gross and net margins at scale?

Competitive Landscape: Who are the direct and indirect alternatives?

Risk Profile: What existential threats could prevent long-term success?

Value Milestones: What operational or financial achievements trigger a step-function increase in enterprise value?

  1. Problem

The problem is not that Americans lack access to car-cleaning services.

The problem is the inconvenience attached to buying them.

Traditional detailing can require a vehicle owner to drive to a shop, leave the vehicle, wait, arrange transportation, or sacrifice personal time. Mobile detailing removes part of that friction by taking the service to the customer.

The parking-lot model goes one step further: it brings the service to places where vehicles are already sitting idle.

The proposition becomes:

Go to work with a dirty vehicle. Come back to a clean one.

There is evidence that consumers already spend significant money solving the broader vehicle-cleaning problem. Carwash.com, citing industry research, reported that the U.S. car wash and auto-detailing industry was projected to reach approximately $20.2 billion in 2025, up from roughly $19.8 billion in 2024.

Grand View Research separately estimated the U.S. car-wash-services market alone at $15.28 billion in 2025.

Those figures do not prove that this particular startup will succeed, but they do show that vehicle cleaning is an established paid market rather than an untested consumer behavior.

Assessment: Strong problem, particularly when convenience is positioned as the product.

This is where the analysis needs discipline.

A startup should not take a $20 billion national industry and pretend all $20 billion is realistically available to one mobile operator.

We separate the opportunity into TAM, SAM, and SOM.

TAM — Total Addressable Market

The broadest industry-level TAM proxy is the U.S. car wash and auto-detailing market.

Using the 2025 industry estimate:

TAM ≈ $20.2 billion annually.

The Federal Highway Administration provides another way to understand the physical scale of the market.

Its 2024 statistics show approximately 297.5 million registered motor vehicles in the United States. Of those, approximately 271.1 million were classified in FHWA's light-duty-vehicle category.

That means the business operates in a country with hundreds of millions of potential vehicle-service units.

SAM — Serviceable Addressable Market

Now narrow the analysis.

Suppose the company initially operates only in New Jersey.

FHWA's 2024 state registration data reports approximately:

2.275 million automobiles
3.810 million trucks
146,003 motorcycles
25,217 buses

for approximately 6.256 million total registered motor vehicles in New Jersey.

New Jersey therefore represents:

6,256,097 ÷ 297,525,836 = approximately 2.10%

of U.S. registered motor vehicles.

If we use vehicle share as a rough geographic proxy for industry spending:

$20.2 billion × 2.10% ≈ $424.7 million

That gives an estimated New Jersey SAM proxy of approximately $425 million annually.

This is not a published New Jersey detailing-market figure. It is a transparent estimate derived from the national market and New Jersey's proportion of registered U.S. vehicles.

That distinction matters.

SOM — Serviceable Obtainable Market

A startup should think much smaller.

If a developing New Jersey operator eventually captured only 0.1% of that estimated $424.7 million state opportunity:

$424.7 million × 0.001 = approximately $424,700 in annual revenue.

At the U.S. reported average detailing ticket of approximately $160.16, that would equal:

$424,700 ÷ $160.16 ≈ 2,652 detailing transactions per year

or approximately:

51 jobs per week over 52 weeks.

That is a much more useful number than claiming the company is chasing a $20 billion market.

Fifty-one weekly jobs could conceivably be distributed across several crews and concentrated parking locations.

Assessment: Large TAM, substantial state-level SAM, and an SOM that can become meaningful without requiring enormous market share.

  1. Target Customer

The primary customer is not simply “someone who owns a car.”

The strongest customer has three characteristics:

They control a vehicle.

They have discretionary income.

They value time enough to pay someone else to clean it.

Mobile Tech RX's pricing research, compiled using Yelp pricing information, found a national average professional detailing price of approximately $160.16, with average-market figures ranging from approximately $114.59 on the lower end to $213.67 on the higher end.

That pricing suggests the strongest customer is not necessarily looking for the absolute cheapest car wash.

This startup would target consumers willing to pay for professional service and convenience.

High-potential segments include office employees, medical professionals, apartment residents, rideshare drivers, executives, parents, fleet operators, and people whose vehicles remain parked for several hours at predictable locations.

There is also a second decision-maker:

The property operator.

A workplace, apartment complex, office park, dealership, or fleet manager could give the company access to dozens or hundreds of vehicles through one commercial relationship.

That can materially change customer-acquisition economics.

Assessment: The end consumer has purchasing power, but B2B access partners may be the more strategically valuable customer-acquisition channel.

  1. Startup Costs

This business has a relatively low physical barrier to entry compared with restaurants, retail stores, manufacturing companies, or many franchises.

A founder does not initially need a permanent commercial location.

An MVP can be built around cleaning equipment, chemicals, towels, vacuuming equipment, brushes, portable electricity if required, scheduling software, payment processing, insurance, transportation, and basic marketing.

The danger is overbuilding.

The founder does not need to purchase the ultimate detailing van before demonstrating demand.

The correct MVP objective is not:

Build the perfect detailing company.

It is:

Prove customers will repeatedly pay.

The labor market also gives us a benchmark for what scaling eventually costs.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 2025 median hourly wage of $17.23 for cleaners of vehicles and equipment, with a mean hourly wage of $17.78. Employment in the occupation totaled approximately 380,430 workers.

That gives the founder a real labor-cost reference when modeling employees instead of assuming their own labor is free.

Assessment: Low-to-moderate startup capital, but scaling introduces real labor, insurance, vehicle, and equipment costs.

  1. Unit Economics

Unit economics is where this startup either becomes a business or exposes itself as an exhausting job.

Let's build a transparent example using published data.

The national average detailing transaction reported by Mobile Tech RX is:

Average ticket: $160.16

Assume:

Revenue: $160.16

Labor

BLS median vehicle-cleaner wage:

$17.23 per hour

Assume two labor hours:

$17.23 × 2 = $34.46

Square's current Free-plan card-present processing rate is listed as:

2.6% + $0.15

On a $160.16 transaction:

$160.16 × 2.6% + $0.15 = approximately $4.31

Vehicle/Travel Allocation

The IRS 2026 business mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile for the relevant period in its published notice.

If a job requires 10 business miles:

10 × $0.725 = $7.25

Assume, for modeling purposes, that chemicals, towel wear, consumables, and miscellaneous direct supplies equal 10% of the sale.

This is an analytical assumption, not an industry statistic.

$160.16 × 10% = $16.02

Modeled Contribution

Revenue:

$160.16

Minus labor:

-$34.46

Minus payment processing:

-$4.31

Minus vehicle allocation:

-$7.25

Minus modeled materials:

-$16.02

Estimated contribution before overhead, taxes, insurance, advertising, management, equipment depreciation, and other expenses:

$98.12

Contribution percentage:

$98.12 ÷ $160.16 ≈ 61.3%

That is not a claim that mobile detailing businesses earn 61.3% net margins.

They do not automatically.

It is a job-level contribution model based on disclosed inputs.

That distinction is critical.

CAC Versus LTV

Suppose customer acquisition costs $25.

Now suppose a customer purchases three $160.16 services annually and remains for two years.

That is an illustrative retention scenario, not a published industry average.

Revenue LTV would be:

$160.16 × 3 × 2 = $960.96

Using the modeled $98.12 job contribution:

$98.12 × 6 = $588.72 contribution before CAC

Minus $25 CAC:

$588.72 - $25 = $563.72

The corresponding revenue-LTV-to-CAC ratio would be:

$960.96 ÷ $25 = 38.4:1

That would be exceptional—but only if the assumed retention and CAC are actually achieved.

This is exactly why the startup needs real customer data before expansion.

Assessment: Potentially strong unit economics, but CAC and repeat frequency must be measured in the field rather than guessed.

  1. Profit Margins

The detailing business can produce healthy gross economics because the physical consumables represent only one part of the selling price.

But labor matters.

Transportation matters.

Customer acquisition matters.

And idle time matters enormously.

Consider two crews producing the same five $160.16 jobs.

Both generate:

5 × $160.16 = $800.80

But Crew A completes all five vehicles in one office parking lot.

Crew B drives between five different neighborhoods.

Revenue is identical.

Economics are not.

This is why density is arguably the entire investment thesis.

The parking-lot model reduces non-billable travel time and potentially reduces customer acquisition costs because multiple customers can be generated from one location.

The business should therefore track:

Revenue per labor hour

Contribution per labor hour

Revenue per location

Jobs per stop

Miles driven per completed job

CAC by acquisition channel

Repeat-purchase rate

rather than simply reporting gross sales.

Assessment: Good gross-margin potential, but net profitability will depend on labor utilization and geographic density.

  1. Competitive Landscape

Competition is significant.

The market already includes full-service car washes, automated car washes, independent detailers, mobile detailers, dealership detail departments, subscription washes, and do-it-yourself cleaning.

Mobile Tech RX specifically describes detailing as a highly competitive industry and notes that low barriers to entry contribute to the competition.

The company therefore cannot build its moat around the statement:

“We detail cars.”

That is not differentiation.

The better positioning is operational:

We clean your vehicle where it already sits.

The real competitive advantages could become:

Exclusive workplace relationships
Apartment-complex partnerships
Dense recurring routes
Fleet contracts
Membership programs
Customer history
Reliable service quality
Online booking
Recurring scheduling
Strong reviews
Efficient crew deployment

The moat is not the vacuum cleaner.

It is the network of locations and repeat customers.

Assessment: Highly competitive market with weak technical barriers but room for operational differentiation.

  1. Risk Profile

The largest risk is not simply competition.

It is bad economics hidden by owner labor.

A founder can convince themselves the business is profitable because $160 comes in and only $15 worth of chemicals appear to go out.

But if the founder spends three hours cleaning, one hour traveling, 30 minutes scheduling, and another hour finding the customer, the true economics look different.

Other major risks include damage claims, insurance costs, poor weather, property restrictions, inconsistent employees, worker turnover, equipment failure, low repeat rates, customer-acquisition costs, local price competition, and inability to maintain sufficient route density.

There is also little technological protection.

A successful parking-lot strategy can be copied.

The defense must be built through commercial agreements, operating execution, reputation, customer retention, and density.

Assessment: Moderate risk. Easy to test, but also easy for competitors to enter.

  1. Value Milestones

A small service company becomes more valuable when uncertainty disappears.

The following milestones would materially change the investment case.

Milestone 1: 25 Paid Customers

Proves that people beyond friends and family will purchase the service.

Milestone 2: Verified Average Ticket

Compare actual pricing against the national approximately $160.16 benchmark.

Milestone 3: CAC Established by Channel

Determine exactly what it costs to acquire a customer through Google, Meta, referrals, workplace partnerships, apartment relationships, and organic search.

Milestone 4: Repeat-Purchase Data

Once customers begin returning, the company can calculate an actual LTV rather than inventing one.

Milestone 5: First Dense Location

One location consistently produces multiple paid vehicles in a single stop.

This validates the parking-lot thesis.

Milestone 6: Founder Replacement

An employee can perform the work to standard without the founder physically servicing every vehicle.

Milestone 7: Second Crew

Two crews operate profitably at the same time.

This demonstrates replication.

Milestone 8: Recurring B2B Locations

Multiple workplaces, residential communities, fleets, or commercial properties produce predictable scheduled demand.

Milestone 9: $500,000+ Annualized Revenue With Positive Unit Economics

This would place the operation around the scale of the 0.1% New Jersey SAM scenario calculated earlier.

At that point, investors or buyers are no longer evaluating a detailing hustle.

They are evaluating a repeatable service system.

Liam Startup Ledger Final Evaluation

Verdict: TEST — BUT DO NOT SCALE YET

The research supports the existence of a large underlying market.

It does not yet prove that the parking-lot model works.

That proof must come from actual operating data.

The first objective should therefore be to secure one concentrated location and record:

customers acquired, CAC, average ticket, minutes per job, miles per job, direct labor, materials consumed, contribution margin, repeat bookings, and jobs per location.

Once those numbers exist, the business can replace assumptions with evidence.

That is the difference between saying:

“Mobile detailing looks profitable.”

and being able to say:

“We spend $22 to acquire a customer worth $640, generate a 48% contribution margin, and average six cars per location visit.”

The first statement is an idea.

The second is an investable business model.
